SIM East Asia

Reaching out to the far corners of the world

SIM East AsiaHave you heard of countries by the names of Niger? Namibia? Malawi? Liberia? Reunion? No, there is no typo error. Niger, Namibia, Eritrea, Liberia and Reunion are some of the countries where SIM established itself to share about the Good News of Christ and to make a difference by serving as an International Christian Mission Agency. We are just a group of people who care about our neighbours and those whom we have never met, who live in other far ends of the world.

The Regional Office of SIM East Asia is based in Singapore. We are tasked to recruit missionaries from Asia, a land of diversities, colourful cultures and multiple languages. If you are not a Christian, you will agree with what we do as we aim to make the less fortunate live a better life. If you are a Christian and would like to explore more about overseas mission, there might be a place for you as we offer Long Term Mission (LTM), Short Term Missions (STM) and Prayer & Cultural Experience (PACE) trips to different parts of the world. If you are a Christian concerned about reaching people in other cultures for Christ, SIM definitely has a place for you on our international team.

We are an international and interdenominational mission agency seeking to bring the Good News to people in partnership with churches. We adopt a holistic approach to meet the needs of a person. Our aim is to glorify God through planting, strengthening and partnering with churches around the world. There are more than 1,800 missionaries making an impact in over 40 countries in Africa, Asia and South America.

SIMEast Asia is responsible for about 50 Asian missionaries who serve in 20 different countries. It serves the region in consolidation of resources, recruiting and dispatching of missionaries, provision of support services to missionaries and overseeing the 8 offices of East Asia. Dr Stanley Ling is the Regional Director.

SIM EA History

SIM EA HistoryThe work of SIM East Asia began with God’s call to Dr Andrew Ng in 1976 and his family’s subsequent departure for missionary service in Africa in 1977.

Andrew’s friends and supporters got together to form a support group which was later organized to become the monthly Africa Prayer Focus. On 29 July 1980, six out of the group formed a council and registered as Sudan Interior Mission(s) Ltd in Singapore. A council member provided a small office within his own office in OG building at Upper Cross Street for the Mission.

In 1981, Malaysian missionary couple Y K Hsueh and Lily and Korean couple, Samuel and Sarah Kang joined the Mission. As work load increased, Tony Lee was engaged to be the General Secretary in July 1982. Upon the completion of one year assignment in Nigeria, the Hsuehs returned to be the East Asia Area Representative. Loh Hoe Peng assumed the chairmanship of the Council and the corporation was re-named “SIM East Asia Ltd”.

SIM East Asia finally bought its own office in 1987, after moving from OG Building to Bras Basah Complex and later to Bartley Christian Church. The 2500 sq ft office unit in Pek Chuan Building at Lavender Street was dedicated in July by Dr Ian Hay, the International Director. By this time, SIM East Asia Ltd had established links in Korea (1980), Philippines (1983), India (1984), Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia and Japan.

In 1989, the Ngs were brought back to Singapore and Andrew was appointed the Regional Director of East Asia in 1990. Together with the Hsuehs and Paul & Grace Chiang, SIM East Asia expanded. And in 1 October 1992, SIM International designated SIM East Asia as a signatory to the SIM International Agreement.

When SIM International merged with International Christian fellowship (ICF) in 1989, their work in the Philippines came under SIM East Asia administration. SIM East Asia also played significant roles in setting up of new fields. For instance, in 1991, SIM East Asia was assigned to explore missional opportunities in Mongolia. On 1 October, 1992, SIM together with seven other evangelical missions established the Joint Christian Services (Mongolia) which seeks to pool resources to hasten outreach in this part of the world. A few years later, SIM East Asia initiated SIM’s ministry in other parts of Central Asia.

The founding and growth of SIM East Asia by itself is a testimony of the faithfulness of God.

SIM EA Future

SIM EA HistoryA 5-Year plan was formulated in the 15th Regional Council Meeting held in Kota Kinabalu from November 20-23 to guide and keep SIM East Asia move forward on the right track.

They include:

  1. To continue maintaining a 100% support for all missionaries.
  2. To strengthen all home councils such that there is a fully functional and vibrant home council in each of the eight areas currently within SIM East Asia.
  3. To recruit at least one full-time or part-time staff for each area to adequately represent SIM in various mission related activities and effectively spearhead our promotions and mobilization among churches and individuals.
  4. To emphasize on recruitment of short term missionaries as a means to introduce and challenge them to long term service.
  5. To commence recruitment of missionaries in India and Central Asia by setting up home councils in these two countries.
  6. To actively promote and mobilize workers from the “emerging mission” countries.
